The Course

The Saranac Inn Golf Course is a Classic Scottish Design.

Designed in classic Scottish fashion using the natural terrain the course has great variety. Every hole at Saranac Inn has its own memorable attributes.

The First gives you a Taste of What’s to Come.

The First hole would be a worthy finishing hole, but coming at the start of the round it demands extra attention. It is championship caliber and one of the best holes in the Adirondacks. A par here will surely result in honors on the second tee and from there the golf just gets better.

The Finish is a Bit Deceptive and a Bit Strategic.

Like all good courses, the best of the finishing holes are strategic and somewhat deceptive.

The Sixteenth is a demanding long par-3 with a sloping back to front green and a tough up and down from anywhere off the green.

The Seventeenth, a par-4 at 430 yards long is a great golf hole, but it is an invitation to disaster if you don’t keep your tee shot well to the left side of the fairway.

The par-5 Eighteenth with an elevated green is a dramatic setting for a closing hole and deserves special judgement for your par and very special judgement for your birdie.

In-between there are 15 Holes to Hold Your Interest.

Inbetween the start and finish you will find a great variety of long, medium and short par 3’s, 4’s and 5’s.

  • Two is a three shot par-5, with Three and Four opening up great scoring opportunities with a short par-3 followed by a short par-4.
  • Five and Six are two tough long par-4’s.
  • Seven is a long par-3 with a mound guarding the green.
  • The short par-4 Eighth hole is almost drivable but with its large undulating green it can turn what looks like an easy birdie into a six if you aren’t careful.
  • The Ninth and Tenth holes are two back to back short par-5’s where you may be able to make up some shots but watch out for the three tier green on number 9.
  • Two strong par 4’s follow and some think the Eleventh may be toughest hole on the course.
  • Twelve can also play tough with its blind second shot into one of the few flat greens.
  • The final 3 holes before the finish are two short par 4’s with a short par 3 in-between.

A Course Strategically Designed for Your Game by Seymour Dunn.

It was Dunn himself who described exactly his goal in designing the course he considered his masterpiece.

The scheme of my masterpiece is not to make a course unduly difficult and sever. I aim to put in as few hazards as possible so as to spare the poor player as much as I can, the game being difficult enough for beginners without strewing their path with only discourage. On the other hand, the few hazards I have put in are so placed as to tax the skill of the advanced player to the limit, in order that the very best play must be brought out and justly rewarded. A course laid out on these lines inspires one to greater aims and so lends one to become a greater player. The total length of the course is 6470 yards, par 70 and if anyone breaks it more than once we will want to frame his picture and hang it up in the clubhouse.”
